Matt's revision on the low tunnel withstood 40 mph winds gusts and we got the ranunculus and anemones planted out! Last year I did a limited planting of 50 ranunculus to see if I could get blooms from these sometimes finicky plants. This year with the addition of the tunnel I was ambitious and got approximately 250 ranunculus and 150 anemones planted out. Blooms take about 90 days and since these were started indoors I hope to starting harvesting flowers by the end of May. Spring flowers are some of our most impressive and I CAN'T WAIT to share them with you!

Success is even sweeter after a failure. We tried our first low tunnel a couple weeks ago and winds tore it up. We revised the approach and it took yesterday’s storm no problem! We will be able to get the ranunculus and anemones out this week!

The first time we tried to clamp the plastic to each rib with heavy duty hand clamps and added bricks around the bottom of the plastic. But once wind gets ahold of any segment and blows it open it’s a wrap. This time we added parachute cord crisscrossed back and forth over the tunnel and attached to carabiners at the base of each rib. This method uses tension throughout the system to keep everything in place and looks to be working well. Thank you to all the content creators who shared their methods on YouTube. We never could have gotten this far on the farm in 1 year without their free guidance.

Failure

Whenever we take a risk and try something new we risk failing. The fear of failure can be paralyzing, preventing us from doing anything and staying with the confines of what we know. But without risk it’s also hard to grow.

I posted last week about our first attempt at a low tunnel. We got it up right before a wind storm knowing that would be a good way to test its capabilities. It failed. Wind got under one end and took the plastic off half the tunnel overnight. That was after multiple trips outside in the storm to try to reinforce it.

That morning when I looked outside for a moment I felt I had failed. But I thought of that oft shared quote, “I didn’t fail. I found 2000 ways not to make a lightbulb.” So I applied the same logic to our endeavor; we have found 1 way not to make a low tunnel. Matt’s working hard on attempt 2 and when the weather cooperates we will get it back up and try again.

In the meantime I was able to plant out 150 ranunculus and anemone in our raised beds with low tunnel frames we made last season. It’s encouraging to see the green sprouts against the beautiful snow covered backdrop.

I’m sure this won’t be the last “failure” of this growing season. But I’m committed to growing and willing to take the necessary risks. What is something you’ve wanted to try? I hope you grant yourself permission to fail so that you can risk success.
