2023 Week 3 Recap

It is still a bit early to rip into most of the seed packs so I’m practicing patience and focusing on the other tasks at hand, like inventorying all of the dahlia tubers we dug in the fall.

Dahlias grow from seed, tubers, or cuttings off the mother plant. Tubers and cuttings are the two methods that ensure you’ll get the same flower on your new plant so that’s the way to go for most plants on the farm.

We trialed several varieties last year and had some favorites for sure. In addition to all of the blooms we got, tubers multiply. In some instances the single tuber had multiplied into 15 tubers by the end of the season! Not all of these will be viable in the spring but I did my best to preserve them for the winter to maximize the number of plants we could have for 2023. This meant digging, washing, dividing, and wrapping each of them for storage. Tubers have to stay cold to stay dormant but too cold and they will rot. Ours are tucked safely in our minimally heated garage.

I checked on them this week to ensure we didn’t have any rot (luckily we did not). And I also counted the number of tubers and cataloged them by variety.

There’s no way I can fit all of those into this years garden but we will definitely plant more of our best producing varieties to share with you.

2023 Week 2 Recap

The sunshine always helps lift my mood. It was great to get out and explore - we even let the kitties try out the snow (Pearl was all about it, Leo not so much lol).

This last week I continued to baby our first round of seedlings but unfortunately I didn’t consider the strength of the fan in drying out our lisianthus soil blocks. I killed over 90% of them.

Fail.

But I’ve worked hard on my perfectionism mindset and that allowed me the freedom to not beat myself up about it. To simply acknowledge what I could do differently next time and move forward. What I’ve learned over the years is fear of failure keeps me stuck, it prevents change and growth. I can allow myself grace and be a student.

Besides, all great gardeners kill lots of plants.

2023 Week 1 Recap

What do flower farmers do in the winter????
This is a question we often get, and while there isn’t as much to do outside once the weather turns frigid, there’s lots of plans and planting going on inside.

This past week we started some of our slowest growers. That’s right, we already have seeds under the lights! Lisianthus and eucalyptus are off to a good start. These two plants are new to us this year. When we decided to start a farm last February, it was already too late to get these established. We can’t wait to include these in our bouquets, we know they will be a hit!

We also kicked off winter sowing of perennials and hardy annuals. Recycled one gallon jugs make the perfect mini greenhouse for these seeds that do best with a cold stratification period. We’ve added delphinium, foxglove, larkspur, lupine, and lysmachia so far. It’s our first time trying this method so we will keep you updated along the way. Definitely something you could do to grow plants for your own garden at home.
